Creating 1:1 Expectations

This is a helpful sample to give you a sense for one way to kick off a new series of 1:1 meetings with a team member.

In this course, you heard me say that the employee owns the agenda.

What do you each own?

The manager owns:

  • The calendar invite.
  • Ensuring a regular 1:1 cadence.
  • Holding space for the team member.
  • Empowering the team member to bring an agenda.
  • Ensuring the overall 1:1 experience is well-rounded and valuable.

The team member owns:

  • The agenda.
  • Identifying areas of updates, requests for support, etc.

I love this from Kim Scott of Radical Candor:

"But I think the idea that your employee owns the agenda is a simple, symbolic practice that helps them feel ownership and autonomy for their work and their time. You’re saying, 'You tell me what’s important,' and of course you can coach and guide them to help refine over time what’s important. Remember that Steve Jobs said 'we hire people to tell us what to do, not the other way around.'"
